Part One The concepts of Messianic Transformational Leadership

3. The characteristics factors of Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s leadership

2) Patriotism

Rev. Moon taught, "Those who cannot love their own nation cannot love Heavenly Parents(Heaven)." (Malseum Seonjip, vol.199, pp.185-186)

During his studying in Tokyo, Rev. Moon was the leader of Korean international students in Japan and led an independence movement for Korea against Japan. He would say to the students that he would take full esponsibility for all their activities and even their crimes because he already risked his life for the sake of justice. Because of his patriotic movement, he was examined by Japanese police once or twice every month until his return to Korea.

However, his anti-Japanese activity was not for revenge because he fought the Japanese colonization policy, not Japanese people. (Tatsuo Sasaki, Rev. Sun Myung Moon, HIS LIFE 1935-1961, 1992, p. 4)

Rev. Moon said that he shed tears for his country more than anyone else, so he did not envy any patriot. (Malseum Seonjip, vol. 155, pp. 317-18) In this way, patriotism is essential for Rev. Moon’s leadership: “After we love the nation, we can love God.”

3) Study for the sake of humanity

Rev. Moon taught, "A person who studies only for himself/herself gets tired easily." Therefore, "study seriously, thinking that the life and death of 30 millions’ people depend on just these three sentences and this one page.” (Malseum Seonjip, vol. 22, p.123)

Therefore, Rev. Moon used efforts to find out the truth, continuing to pray as long as 12 hours or 14 hours a day for years with blood, sweat and tears. And he read simultaneously Korean, Japanese and English translations of the Bible, comparing the meaning of various passages in each. So, Rev. Moon's Bible was full of comments and reflections: "there were a number of red marks on every page and in the margins where he wrote a sentence after a sentence." (Father’s Course for 21 days (7days) seminars, CARP, p. 7)

A true leader should study seriously for the sake of humanity because he/she should discover the true path of life which humanity must go.
