Part One The concepts of Messianic Transformational Leadership

3. The characteristics factors of Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s leadership

5) Transforming an enemy into friend

When Rev. Sun Myung Moon studied abroad in Japan, he loved Japan more than anyone else did. If he made money, he gave all the money to his friends and made a condition to love Japan. Sometimes Rev. Moon fought a terrible group(gang) to save a weak person.

Eventually, many Japanese friends confided their secrets to him, calling him their 'best friend'(boss).(=natural subjugation) Rev. Moon taught, "Heroes are those who can transform(turn) enemies into friends. A true leader should love his/her enemy before he/she strikes him/her. On the contrary, a man/woman who does not like people can never become a true leader."

Therefore, a true leader should transform even his/her enemies into his/her faithful followers by loving them so that they can confide their own secrets to him/her.

cf) "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend." -Martin Luther King-

6) Self-discipline

Rev. Moon emphasized, “If I can control myself, I can control the world.” (Malseum Seonjip, vol. 81, p. 145) In order to strengthen his spirit and weaken physical desire, Rev. Moon controlled sleep, hunger, and sexual desire, the three major enemies to control himself.

For this, he trained himself by staying up all night, starving and living alone. Everyday he had only two meals, so he was always hungry until he was 30. However, he determined that “although I am hungry, I will love my country and God more than myself.”(=hungry spirit)(Malseum Seonjip, vol.15, pp.183-84) Also, he always wore poor looking clothes and slept outdoors, wrapped in a newspaper in the winter. He overcame many girls’ temptations.

Therefore, a true leader must be victorious in dominating himself/herself by self-control before he/she leads other people and the world.
